Week 1 It’s a Sin to be this bad.
When I look back upon my life
It’s always with a sense of shame
I’ve always been the one to blame
For everything I long to do
No matter when or where or who
Has one thing in common, too
It’s a, it’s a, it’s a, it’s a…
…terribly poor Fantasy League choice given all the other options available.
Less catchy than Mr Tennant’s 1987 pop classic, but incredibly relevant this week. My sins in the auction have left me in purgatory.
If the answer to any Fantasy League question is ‘I think I need to buy Sunderland defenders’ then things have gone badly wrong.
I have 4 fullback weighing the squad flexibility down. The midfield (none of which I wanted) actually scored, but only one of my 4 strikers did (Thiago) and none of them – Watkins, Gyokeres, Evanilson or Thiago – looked worth a tenth of the money I spent on them only days earlier. To top it all, Tarkowski gave away the most dubious looking penalty to spoil his clean sheet.
Do I offload Vicario before an inevitable hammering at Manchester City? Do I resolve the full back problem now and abandon Bradley before he has a chance, or assume Timber is a back up and get a starter in? We get points for an appearance in our league, so passengers are not an option. Sunderland looked good….away dark thoughts.
Should I sell Gyokeres to fund a bid for Sesko and get some money in? Gyokeres looked very flat in Arsenal’s game. Is Watkins past it? Is Thiago actually terrible? Perhaps Calvert Lewin will get close to his xG again? No – surely that way darkness lies.
Or …do I hunker down, let others throw money around and strike in a couple of weeks, picking up the gems my rivals have been too hasty to cast-off? Though the ‘freeze’ response to a threat is hardly inspiring.
It’s a Sin was number 1 38(!) years ago this summer, and similarly my reign as Fantasy League maestro may be ancient history unless things improve and fast. But given we are limited to 25 transfers in our league and I have the least money left of all the managers, I might need to receive some divine absolution before I get out of this mess.
Father, forgive me. I have no idea.
